In conjunction with Diabetic Eye Disease Awareness Month, Eyecon partnered with Mahkota Medical Centre during their World Diabetes Day 2024 event to raise awareness about the link between diabetes and eye health.

Murphy highlighted those new technologies are instrumental in the early detection and prevention of eye diseases and even general health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and stroke.

“Artificial intelligence (AI) in diagnostic equipment has become a game-changer. AI-infused tools can identify and predict eye diseases like cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration.”

“Moreover, this technology plays a crucial role in the early detection and management of myopia (shortsightedness), potentially slowing down its progression.”

The innovations extend beyond diagnostics, encompassing corrective glasses and lenses. He explained that these innovative corrective solutions prioritise vision correction and cater to age-related changes and different lifestyles through the harmonious integration of technology into eye care.

“For example, thanks to innovation, we now have multifocal contact lenses, which enhances the lives of individuals grappling with presbyopia, especially the ageing population.

“Another example is for those with active lifestyles. We now have Bluetoothenabled glasses, providing vision correction and eye protection for the eyes while seamlessly integrating your tunes, podcasts, and phone calls without blocking your ears.”

Looking ahead, Murphy suggested that AI and teleoptometry will play significant roles in the future of eye healthcare, emphasising the importance of ECPs to stay abreast of these innovations.

In the face of these advancements, ECPs find themselves at the forefront of change. Murphy asserted that adapting to the evolving landscape is not optional for ECPs. Instead, it is a necessity that inspires comprehensive eye examinations.

“Since 2010, Eyecon has assisted thousands of deserving and underprivileged communities to have better eye care and provided vision aid, reaching out to schools as well as orphanages and elderly folk,” said the father of two boys.

Chan said his team was able to reach out to schools in rural areas through a mobile vision vehicle, equipped with portable vision-testing equipment to detect vision errors, binocular vision problems, colour vision and all kinds of eye diseases.

He works relentlessly to provide quality eye care and transform the lives of underprivileged children where Eyecon has launched a campaign called “Penglihatan Jelas, Prestasi Cemerlang” (PJPC) to continue the noble work.

Chan said PJPC has reached out to schoolchildren to create an awareness of the importance of good vision, educating them with good visual hygiene and guiding them to perform well in schools, both academic or non-academic, through guided vision exercises.

“Under the PJPC, I have compartmentalised the rewarding system for schoolchildren to qualify subsequent free eyeglasses in a bid to teach them to appreciate the complimentary spectacles.

“Apart from excelling in studies, students with good co-curricular achievements and high discipline will qualify for the annual spectacles giveaway.

“Respecting teachers and parents is an additional criterion that I have incorporated in my reward system,” he said.
